  Ernest Kay Award 2006

Not a 'World Champion', nor even an 'Olympic medallist' in the 1936 Olympic Games, But Mabel Willis joins the exalted ranks of those who have won the prestigious Ernest Kay Award from The Rotary Club of Radcliffe.  Each year we choose a person who has achieved or given exceptional service to the town of Radcliffe and it was no surprise when Mabel came out top.

Mabel who shares the same birthday as the Queen, has served as a member of The Radcliffe Division St. Johns Ambulance Brigade since 1972 when she came to live in Radcliffe.  She had been encouraged to join following her experience as a mock casualty with the brigade in Middlesex, on one occasion she came down from the roof of a bombed out building strapped to a stretcher.

In 1983 Mabel became Divisional Superintendent of The Radcliffe Division a position she held until 1998 it was then that she moved to the County Pool as a serving officer.  She also continues to serve as a secretary and member of the St John Fellowship, as well as President and secretary of the Radcliffe Branch.  In August 2003 Mabel was awarded the Shining Star for her services to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Mabel is to accompany Agnes Tonge a previous winner of The Ernest Kay Award to a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace on 18th July this year. She is still a very hard worker, money raiser and an example to us all.
